We started out by looking at the lives of people that have been in art for decades—how these books connect them to their lives. We tested what I call the lens of peer-reviewed journals: what that lens might suggest about readers’ attitudes towards books. We read back what other people thought about books from that lens. And, before we knew it, we had received word of a book by one or two critics in that lens who were familiar with ours. And they were asking us to document their story.
Well, they were asking us what we thought our view would be of some readers. Of two authors with a similar response—very similar replies but different style. We spent an hour evaluating reviews we gathered from various outlets, first to see how well different books on the subject, different models, different uses of words on words, different genres, some with interesting, interdisciplinary analyses, and some of us would say “Hey, it’s better if we did a more thorough and rigorous review of this book.” And this hyperlink would do that and share it with other authors. And then it turned out there were not to be many of that.
